Is there anything good in us except Jesus? Pastor John has made a similar statement that makes me uncomfortable. "Non-Christians can do nothing good." (That's a paraphrase.) I think what he means is the only things that are good are those done for the glory of God. I don't think this brings God's common grace into play. How many times have you heard an unregenerate musician sing and worshiped God? Many for me. I thank God for working through that musician, even without her knowing it.
I think that the refrain you mention has a similar slant. I could see someone saying, "the only good things in me Jesus has given me." It sounds like a TOO large of an overstatement to me.
