first hike of the year

Terry and I did a day hike. We put in at the Cascade wayside and hiked south along the Superior Hiking Trail. There was a lot more snow than we both expected. We regretted not bringing up our snowshoes. We didn't see a single person, and the woods were extremely quite and peaceful. We did however find evidence of heavy deer traffic, a well as many other animal tracks. We came to a small river crossing and decided to make camp for lunch. After building a fire, we dried our feet as we ate and talked about life. We decided to go a bit further down the trail after a good rest and some food. It had been sprinkling on and off all day, so conditions we're less than perfect considering it was only 34 degrees. Shortly down the trail we crossed a snowmobile trail and decided to follow it to the lake. Once we crossed over hwy 61, we hiked the shoreline back to our car. There was some cool spots where we had to do some traversing and one river crossing where we had to do some bouldering to get across.

It was a great trip. It's so good to get out of the busy and bombardment of the city and into the woods for a while. I hope I have many more times like this come summer and fall.
